Published March 8, 2023 at 7:25 PM

Rarely do two significant events in the league coincide on the same day, but March 8th marks the occurrence of three of the most terrifying injuries in league history.

The Most Dangerous Day in NHL History?

Mike Commito, a dedicated hockey fan, provides daily updates on significant events in the league's history. Today's update was particularly noteworthy as three of the NHL's most horrific injuries occurred on past March 8ths.

March 8th, 2004, marked the infamous incident when Todd Bertuzzi punched Steve Moore in the back of the head, resulting in a career-ending injury for Moore. The incident also led to a lawsuit against Bertuzzi.

March 8th, 2007, witnessed one of the most violent slashes in league history when Chris Simon struck Ryan Hollweg. Simon's actions earned him a 25-game suspension, one of the most extended penalties ever imposed in the league.

Lastly, on March 8th, 2011, Zdeno Chara delivered a terrifying hit to Max Pacioretty, causing a season-ending injury, further alarming given Chara's towering height of 6'9".

It's reasonable to assume that NHL players who have studied their history will exercise caution on future March 8ths. This is a trend that no one wants to see continue.
