Major Trade Rumor Emerges

There are a lot of rumors swirling about Toronto Maple Leafs' defenseman T.J. Brodie possibly being traded.

As the Leafs eagerly await the outcome of Ilya Samsonov's contract arbitration on Friday, they are looking for ways to strengthen their defense. If the rumors are true, there might be some exciting lineup changes coming up for the Leafs.

T.J. Brodie Traded?

NHL insider David Pagnotta has hinted that the Leafs are open to trading T.J. Brodie.

In an interview with Nick Alberga on 'Leafs Morning Take,' Pagnotta mentioned Flames defensemen Noah Hanifin, Nikita Zadorov, and Chris Tanev as potential options for the Leafs to consider.

Hanifin's style of play would be a valuable asset to the Leafs, but his contract worth $4.95 million until 2024 might make Toronto hesitate. Tanev, on the other hand, has a lower price tag of $4.5 million and brings experience at the age of 32, although he may not provide as much offense as Hanifin. Zadorov, the most affordable option at $3.75 million, could bring strong defensive skills to the Leafs.

It's uncertain where Brodie might end up, whether he returns to his previous team in Calgary or is traded elsewhere. He spent ten years with the Flames before joining Toronto and was chosen in the 2008 Draft.

During his last season with the Leafs, Brodie scored 2 goals and earned 14 points in 58 games. With a salary of $7.5 million and a cap hit of $5 million for the 2023-24 season, trading Brodie could be a financial challenge for the Leafs. This is why the more affordable option, Zadorov, is appealing.

Although the Toronto Maple Leafs haven't made any major trades yet, they are actively working to manage their salary cap restrictions. Brad Treliving seems to be looking back to his former team for potential solutions.
