The Toronto media have notoriously been harsh on their team, but a recent hit piece on star forward Mitch Marner takes it to a whole new level.

On the verge of a comeback for an injury that's kept him out of action for the past two weeks, Mitch Marner is excited to get back on the ice for Toronto, doing his usual media before the return. Unfortunately, like we know the Toronto media are capable of doing, they intentionally twisted a story, this time being Dave Alter representing The Hockey News.
In this piece, Alter continues referring to Marner's 'constant callbacks to media criticism' by calling it tiresome, even telling Marner that he needs to look in the mirror to decide if that is a productive approach.
Then, the article intentionally mis-quoted Marner as he was sticking up for his starting goaltender Ilya Samsonov amidst the criticism he's taken this season from the media.
"Amazed at the spin on this quote. The article comes off like Marner is an a**hole to the media and the quote is cut in a way to provide that narrative.

Instead Marner shows leadership, defends his guy, and praises how far he's come. Wouldn't be shocked to see a backtrack today."
It's safe to say that media attention like this for someone who has been at the top of their game for years may be a reason why some free agents don't want to come to Toronto, because it must be incredibly exhausting to deal with this each and every single day. Sure, Marner being outspoken on some issues doesn't help with how he is portrayed by the media, but this is taking it too far, and instead of talking about his return to the lineup on Saturday, the media has continued making it about themselves.
