Kyle Dubas's Grandma Calls Out Former Leafs Defenseman

In a series of events that shook the hockey world this offseason, Kyle Dubas was fired by the Maple Leafs and subsequently brought on by the Penguins, who are trying to squeeze one last cup run out of their current core. Dubas was then replaced by former Flames GM Brad Treliving.

Treliving Shakes Up The Leafs

Treliving brought in a few additions to the Leafs, most notably, Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and John Klingberg. Michael Bunting, Justin Holl, and Alex Kerfoot were the most significant subtractions from the team. That being said, these were mostly depth moves. While Klingberg and Bertuzzi and both playing prominent roles on the team, they are not core players and could themselves be replaced if they had to.

This morning on TSN 1050's First Up, former Leafs defenseman and co-host of the show Carlo Colaiacovo brought up the differences between this year's Leafs and the team they rostered last year. Colaiacovo called this year's team "Treliving built," which did not sit well with one member of the Dubas family.

Dubas Claps Back

Marrieta, Kyle's grandmother, makes a valid point here. While Treliving did make some notable moves, this Leafs team was largely built by Kyle Dubas. While Auston Matthews recently signed an extension with Treliving, that deal does not kick in until next season. As a matter of fact, every member of the core four is currently on a deal that Dubas signed. The entire blueline outside of John Klingberg was put together by Dubas. Both of the team's top two goalies were Dubas additions as well.


The Leafs also have a number of Kyle Dubas draft picks such as Fraser Minten, Matthew Knies, and Nick Robertson that could be staples on future Leafs teams. While Treliving (Or someone else) will be responsible for signing and extending those players, it was Dubas who brought them to the team in the first place.
