George Parros Under the Microscope as Fans Grow Angrier at the Department of Player Safety

The head of the NHL's Player Safety Department, the man who has the final word on fines and suspensions for the league, is facing increasing criticism as the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs go on.

The latest incident has the internet on fire with deep criticisms of recent and past decisions made by George Parros. The most recent ones involving Florida's Sam Bennett are just the latest in a list of divisive rulings made by the Department of Player Safety (DoPS).

Few are suggesting Parros is biased in his decision making (although there are always some). The main criticism is that he and his department just aren't very good at determining what does and doesn't deserve a suspension. Consistency is another highly disputed area.

Bennett's crosscheck to the neck and back of Bunting in game 2, one of those coming when Bunting had been knocked to the ice, earned a $5000 fine (the maximum allowable, of course) and nothing else.

This play on Matthew Knies received nothing, not even a penalty. The Maple Leafs have stated that Knies will not return for this series due to a concussion.

At some point, the NHL and/or Player Safety are going to have to address serious questions regarding the decision making process. It might be easier to review the entire department and those in charge first.
