While the team's stalwarts,
Connor McDavid and
Leon Draisaitl, are mostly spared from negative feedback, the brunt of criticism seems to fall on other players like Darnell Nurse. The scrutiny on Nurse is particularly intense given his contract situation.
Following a promising start to his tenure with the Oilers, Nurse inked an enormous 8-year, $74 million contract. This agreement guarantees him an annual salary cap hit of $9.25 million, placing him among the highest-paid players and elite defensemen in the NHL.
Is the Criticism Warranted?
Since his contract signing, Nurse has managed to rack up 35 points in 71 games and 43 points over a full 82-game season. Despite his contributions, he's been a common target of criticism. In response to the negative comments, Nurse recently spoke up.
During his recent appearance on the Mitts Off podcast, Nurse voiced his frustration with Oilers' fans. He expressed how he feels blamed for everything, from a goal scored against the Oilers to the traffic congestion on Stony Plain.
While some argue that his earnings do not match his performance, it's undeniable that the level of criticism he receives can occasionally be over the top.
