The Pittsburgh Penguins announced Tuesday that they have signed former Toronto Maple Leafs defensemen Filip Kral to a 1-year contract for the 2024-2025 NHL season.
Kral, 24, was a former 5th round pick of the Maple Leafs in the 2018 NHL draft, but only played 2 games with the team before leaving to play in Finland for the 2023-2024 season.
Kral, who has never been known as a point scorer at any level, broke out this season in the SM-Liiga, Finland's top league, scoring 5 goals and 32 assists in 46 games, by far is best pace at any professional level.

Former Maple Leafs GM and current Penguins GM Kyle Dubas was the man who originally drafted Kral back in 2018, and in true Dubas fashion, brought back one of his boys from his Toronto days.
Kral will have some competition on the Penguins left side, as they have
Marcus Pettersson, P-O Joseph, and
Ryan Graves all signed to NHL deals, so Kral may start the season in the AHL.
Filip Kral is coming off of a fantastic season overseas however, so Dubas is going to have some choices to make during training camp should Kral continue his strong play in North America, and would make a much cheaper option than some other players on his current roster.
