Major Details Revealed on Patrick Roy's Return to the NHL

Following the Quebec Remparts' 2023 Memorial Cup victory, there is growing speculation that Patrick Roy may consider a return to an NHL Bench.

In 2018, Roy assumed the position of Head Coach of the QMJHL's Remparts. This came after a three-year term as the primary coach in Colorado. Notably, Roy won the Jack Adams Award for NHL Coach of the Year in his first season with the Avs in 2013/2014.

However, the Avs' performance gradually deteriorated under his watch. In August 2016, Roy left his position, indicating that his departure was due to a lack of involvement in personnel decisions.

Considering the current coaching vacancies in the NHL, only the Calgary Flames and the New York Rangers remain unclaimed. Other teams, including the Capitals, Predators, Blue Jackets, and Ducks, have already filled their spots.

Despite these open positions, it remains doubtful whether Roy would find a good fit with either team. Roy's dynamic and passionate nature does not seem to align well with the organizations' recent histories.

The Calgary Flames recently released Darryl Sutter, a coach recognized for his gruff and strict style, which the players had enough of by season's end. This situation might not bode well for Roy's engagement with the team.

The New York Rangers let go of Gerard Gallant. Gallant was known as a players' coach during his tenure in the NHL. The question arises whether Roy could handle the continuous scrutiny associated with managing a team in North America's largest media market.

Given these considerations, it appears that Roy might have to wait for a more suitable opportunity to make his much-anticipated return to the NHL.
