Former GM Analyzes Ovechkin's Shocking Decline
Alex Ovechkin's prowess as the NHL's premier goalscorer is legendary, and the anticipation surrounding his quest to overtake Wayne Gretzky's record is palpable.
However, with age catching up, Ovechkin's performance is showing some signs of ebbing.
Ovechkin's Recent Struggles
In the initial four matches of the current season, Ovechkin hasn't scored once. More worryingly, he didn't even take a shot in two back-to-back games - a first in his illustrious career.
Given he's fewer than 100 goals from setting a new all-time record, this slowdown raises eyebrows. Now in his late 30s, if Ovechkin doesn't consistently deliver, his dreams of setting the record could be dashed.
Despite Ovechkin's legendary status, his current form has invited comments from experts on his commitment to the game.
An Expert's Take on Ovechkin's Form
Craig Button, an ex-GM who's now an analyst with TSN, opined on Ovechkin's performance after the Capitals' game against Montreal.
«There were a couple of positive signs in this game versus Montreal, but overall this year, what I've seen from
Alexander Ovechkin - he just, to me, hasn't had the same level of physical or mental engagement in the game,»
«He doesn't look like that player that's driving play, that wants the puck. When you watch him at his best, he's skating, he's driving plays, using his body to deliver body checks, he's in that spot, ready with his stick. I haven't seen that from him this year.» - Craig Button
If Button's observation holds true, the sporting world may be witnessing the twilight of a great.
It's particularly disappointing considering Gretzky himself expressed enthusiasm about witnessing Ovechkin chase his goal record.
