The Search for a New GM Goes on in Toronto
The search for the new general manager in Toronto has started a week ago and it's still making the headlines. While all eyes are fixated on Brad Treliving, considered by many as the front-runner, it's worth noting that the race is far from over.
No other potential contender has yet been confirmed to have had an official discussion with Leafs' president Brendan Shanahan. However, a noteworthy mention popped up during today's edition of TSN's First Up radio show, hinting at another strong potential candidate. Former Leaf star Carlo Colaiacovo proposed a new name, the General Manager of the Dallas Stars Jim Nill.
Here's what Colaiacovo had to share:
"A name that I heard pop up yesterday is Jim Nill...he's got one year left on his current deal and has a really close relationship with Shanahan from their time in Detroit. We'll see how this plays out if he's a guy they want to interview when Dallas gets eliminated."

Shanahan emphasized the need for an experienced candidate. Nill's track record speaks volumes in this regard. Flashback to the 2017 draft year, Nill masterfully selected Miro Heiskanen, Jason Robertson, and Jake Oettinger, all of whom have evolved into crucial players, leading the Stars to the Western Conference Finals.
Nill's management style echoes Dubas'—exceptionally savvy at drafts, stern with star players when their performance slips, and a history of pulling off winning deals at the trade deadline to give his team that necessary boost.
He has left his mark on this team in multiple ways. Therefore, should he become available, he would undoubtedly be one of the top contenders under the Maple Leafs' microscope.
