It's been quite the buzz in the Toronto Maple Leafs' camp this summer. A flurry of changes and signings have already taken place, with Brad Treliving taking up the mantle as the new general manager, and the squad bolstered by the likes of John Klingberg and Max Domi.
The latest update, however, is a bit of a damper, as goalie
Matt Murray finds himself side-lined on injured reserve.
But hey, summer's only half done, and new GM Treliving still has a lot on his to-do list.
Believing In «Defense Wins Championships»
Must read on Daily Hockey Dose
Despite the addition of John Klingberg, an offensive defenseman, during the initial wave of free agency, Toronto's defense could use a bit more grit.
Klingberg's dynamic style enriches the defense, yet, he's not the most physically imposing. Treliving might need to delve into the trading market to find that rugged blueliner, as most aggressive defensemen in free agency are already off the board.
Let's Talk Stars and Contracts
At the top of Treliving's agenda? Securing extensions for
Auston Matthews and
William Nylander, both of whose contracts are set to expire right after the fast approaching season. As offensive lynchpins of the Leafs, locking these two down is paramount to potential championship aspirations. The rumour mill suggests the Leafs are edging closer to seeing Matthews penning his extension before Nylander.
Looking Ahead at the 2023-24 Leafs
Contrary to widespread speculation, Treliving hasn't drastically shaken up the Leafs' core. The key playoff contributors remain largely intact. One interesting subplot to follow will be the powerplay dynamic.
Morgan Rielly has been the go-to powerplay orchestrator for several seasons now, but with the powerplay-savvy Klingberg joining the mix, fans can expect to see a shift.
Buckle up Leafs fans as the season approaches.
