Penguins defenseman Jeff Petry has been facing criticism from fans after his performance against the New Jersey Devils on April 4.

Missteps on the Ice

Petry's showing against the Devils on Tuesday night was nothing short of disastrous. A poor decision to pinch in the Devils' zone led to a 2-on-1 situation, giving Dawson Mercer the opportunity to score his first of three goals that evening.

To make matters worse, Petry was penalized for a delay of game in the second period, which allowed Timo Meier to score and put the Devils up 3-0.

A Bad Trade?

As the season progresses, fans are increasingly questioning GM Ron Hextall's decision to acquire Petry.

The 35-year-old was traded, along with Ryan Poehling, by the Montreal Canadiens in 2022 in exchange for Mike Matheson and a 2023 4th round pick. Petry's contract is worth $6.25 million and runs through the 2024-25 season.

Matheson is currently playing extremely well with the Habs. He scored 30 points in 44 games.
