When the Philadelphia Flyers drafted Matvei Michkov at No. 7 overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, many saw it as a risk, and now, it's becoming more clear the risk that they took.

A demotion coming?

According to a recent report, it appears that Michkov may be starting the 2023 season in the MHL, a step down from the KHL, the top league in Russia that he's played in for the past two years.

Don't be surprised if #FueledByPhilly Matvei Michkov starts the season in the #MHL.

SKA is DEEP now (well always have been). #KHL

This comes after a tough pre-season where Michkov's playing time was slowly reduced until he was scratched altogether, leaving many to wonder exactly what has happened with the 18-year old.

Untapped potential

Despite this, Michkov still has the size, talent, speed and skill to be a key player at the highest level, but this latest move suggests that there's things holding him back from realizing all of that potential.

The Flyers future is up in the air right now, as they lack the elite level talent throughout the pipeline to give their fans optimism, and with many of their hopes pinned on his shoulders, they'll be hoping he can turn things around over the next 12 months.
