Matthew Tkachuk was arguably the biggest star of the 2023-24 NHL season, as he carried the Florida Panthers all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, and it came on the back of a whirlwind summer.

A blockbuster trade

It all started after Johnny Gaudreau left Calgary in free agency, and shortly after, Tkachuk, who was drafted by the Flames with the No. 6 overall pick back in 2017, requested to be traded.

Not only that, but Calgary then offered him the freedom and time to find himself a trade partner, effectively making him a UFA before the Panthers swooped and landed him.

I felt very lucky because I basically was a UFA.

Three finalists

While he ultimately ended up in Florida, Tkachuk also revealed the two teams that were deep in the running to make a move with Calgary to land the star winger.

With their permission, I was allowed to basically for one week talk to, you know, other teams and figure it out, obviously with their permission and everything. The three final teams were Florida, Carolina, and St. Louis.

While it would have been fun to see Tkachuk on the team his father played for over his lengthy and legendary NHL career, it's safe to say that he made a great decision by going with Florida, and we will now see if he can get them back to the Stanley Cup Finals again.
