Edmonton Oilers' Trade Deal for Mattias Ekholm: A Retrospective

In a significant trade deal that was completed at the previous trade deadline, the Edmonton Oilers strengthened their defense line.

They sent Tyson Barrie, Reid Schaefer, a 2023 1st round draft pick, and a 2024 4th round draft pick in exchange for Mattias Ekholm, along with a 2024 6th round draft pick.

With the conclusion of the Oilers' playoff journey, the aforementioned trade deal has now officially reached completion.

Announcement of Edmonton's Draft Position

News has been revealed regarding the Oilers' upcoming draft position: they will be placed in the 24th position. This isn't beneficial news for the team, as this position belongs to Nashville due to the previous trade deal.

Assessing the Impact of the Trade

Having three seasons remaining on Ekholm's contract, priced at a reasonable $6,250,000 AAV, the Oilers' trade decision seems to be heavily favourable for them. This is proven by Ekholm's solid performance throughout the season.

The Oilers' Position in the Upcoming Draft

After the finalization of the trade deal, the Oilers are left with four draft picks, Despite this, General Manager Ken Holland will most likely want to make additional trades.
