Montreal Canadiens and Pittsburgh Penguins Make Waves with Major Trade Deal: Goaltender Jake Allen Shares His Reaction
The dust has finally settled from the blockbuster Karlsson trade that saw Montreal get an additional goaltender in Casey DeSmith. With current goalies Jake Allen and Sam Montembeault splitting time last season, this has raised questions about what GM Kent Hughes will do.
DeSmith In Montreal for the Long Haul?
Hughes stated in his press conference announcing the trade that he would look to potentially move DeSmith, however, he wouldn't be in any particular rush. The curious part, though, is the fact that he also told DeSmith that he didn't want to bury him in the Minors.
Three-way Goaltending
Current Habs goaltender Jake Allen recently spoke up about the situation in an interview with Radio Canada.
"There are only 23 players on a roster. It will be up to them to decide if they want to waste a spot on an extra goaltender or not. But I think in the future, there will be more and more goaltenders who play during the season, not just two. It's the very nature of the position."
"The game is so fast. Injuries are becoming more frequent because young players are playing hockey more and more often. The body accumulates mileage at a younger age. I think in the future, we will see three or four goalies being used very regularly throughout the year."

Allen could be right, though it would be a tricky situation for Hughes. While having three goalies seems like a great strategy to ensure depth and prevent injuries from railroading a season, that means less depth up front or even on defence.
Either way, Hughes has the upper hand here. Hopefully, for Habs fans, the rotation will pay off on the ice, or in future assets.
