The Toronto Maple Leafs core four have been a staple in the city for years now, but after another playoff failure, they could be looking to shake things up in a big way.
While Mitch Marner and John Tavares are locked in, both Auston Matthews and William Nylander are currently seeking long-term deals, and at this point, it's much more likely that the latter won't be getting that this summer.
The extension talks between the two teams have now stalled, and now, it appears the possibility of a trade is becoming more real, with one team in Western Canada now becoming the favourite to land him.
While he's been linked to seemingly every team in the league, Eklund of Hockey Buzz has now brought up a team that we've heard for months: the Calgary Flames. Not only is that Nylander's home town team, but they also have a history and a relationship with current Leafs GM Brad Treliving, and putting the pieces together, it makes sense.
The target for Toronto in this deal appears to be Noah Hanifin, who would immediately improve the Leafs blue line alongside Morgan Rielly, and at this point, it's the best trade for both teams to make to change their outlook of the organization.
