This NHL insider has just revealed that the Toronto Maple Leafs are getting close to a potential massive trade with the Calgary Flames for this sought-after player.

Friedman Reveals Leafs Eyeing Hanifin For Potential Trade

The Toronto Maple Leafs are in an interesting position coming into the month prior to the deadline, as they definitely need to make some improvements to their roster if they want to be a contender this year. The main focus of where the Leafs need to improve has been focussed a the blueline.
Now, insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed that the Leafs are still very interested in Calgary's Noah Hanifin, and are getting closer to a potential deal.
"I said a while ago he's their target until he's not available and I still believe that to be the case, and he might not be the only one."
This would be a massive addition to the Leafs blueline. If they can manage the cap situation, this would give them some depth on the blueline that they desperately need.

Hanifin Having Great Season This Year After Slow Down Last Season

Hanifin has had a pretty impressive year this year considering his slowdown last season. Through the first 49 games, he has been able to 8 goals and 17 assists for 25 points. Notably, he also has been able to maintain a plus/minus of +10, which is impressive considering Calgary's struggles.
I think for me the only way Tanev makes sense is if the Leafs get Hanifin as well.

Don't get me wrong, Tanev would be an upgrade, but he's not enough of a needle mover to significantly increase the Leafs' chances of winning this season.
Hanifin may be a pricey addition for the Leafs but could be necessary if the Leafs want to go for a long run this season. The bigger question around whether or not this will happen is if Brad Treliving is willing to play ball in the middle of the season, something he has been speculated as not willing to do.
We will see what decisions Treliving looks to make as the deadline approaches.
