The reason that the Carolina Hurricanes being interested automatically makes them the favorites is because of what they can give up. The Hurricanes have been linked to trading one of their own stars in
Martin Necas.
Islanders reporter reveals why the Hurricanes are the favorite to land Nikolaj Ehlers
According to Stefen Rosner a Martin Necas return for Nikolaj Ehlers would be better than what almost any other team could offer.
If Necas is offered in a deal for Ehlers, the Islanders or any other team would have a tough time matching that from a personnel standpoint.
The Jets would likely have to part ways with more pieces than Ehlers to make the move, as Necas may hold more value.
With this extra bargaining chip the Carolina Hurricanes have a much further head start on negotiations compared to almost any other team in the NHL. At the moment it is unclear if the two teams are in talks for a swap of stars but if they are other teams could move on to plan b.
Over the next several months this will be a situation to watch as both the Carolina Hurricanes and Winnipeg Jets will be looking to move on from their respective stars.
