Recently, the Toronto Maple Leafs added veteran defenseman Jani Hakanpaa and fans were ready to welcome a second former Dallas Star to their blueline alongside Chris Tanev. and Stanley Cup champion Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

I love Jani Hakanpaa.

Big, tough and he hits everything.
However, things aren't going as smoothly as hoped. A week later, the official signing of Hakanpaa is still on hold due to health concerns.
Are there no Journalists in Toronto who can figure out what is going on w/Jani Hakanpaa and if he's going to be a Leaf or not?
Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun shed some light on the situation.
I was told that Hakanpaa might never play in the NHL again. His knee is reportedly in terrible shape—bone-on-bone. According to two sources, no team would likely sign him.

Simmons mentioned that the team's doctors had examined Hakanpaa and given him the green light.
I asked the Leafs about the injury on Monday, and they informed me that he was cleared by the Toronto doctors.

Only if he passes the medical. Otherwise the signing is void.

I suspect, after a close medical evaluation, they will sign him for a lower deal, and then put him on LTIR for the year.
If the Leafs can't make this work somehow or Hakanpaa is truly going to be out long-term, this would be a massive stain on GM Brad Treliving's offseason, despite the excitement he has brought to Leafland so far.
