Nylander Speaks Up on Contract Talks with the Leafs

As anticipation builds around William Nylander's contract status with the Toronto Maple Leafs, the star forward finally sheds light on his perspective.

In a recent episode of 32 Thoughts, Nylander talked with hosts Elliotte Friedman and Jeff Marek. He clarified that while he wants to remain in Toronto, but isn't in a hurry to get the deal done.

"Right now, I'm just gearing up for the season. Brad and my agent can handle the contract talks. Toronto is where my heart is, there's no other place I see myself playing,"
expressed Nylander.

Nylander, 27, is wrapping up a six-year contract from 2018. This agreement has given the forward a cool $6.9M annually. But with Matthews getting a whopping $13.25M till 2028, Nylander's upcoming figure is bound to see a raise.

On the same podcast, Friedman shared a nugget that top league players might follow in Matthews' footsteps, prioritizing a heftier paycheck over longer commitments. This is particularly probable given the projected surge in the salary cap. But the Leafs have their plate full; they need to secure signatures from Captain John Tavares and top scorer Mitch Marner for the forthcoming season.
