Marc-Andre Fleury's Sweet Revenge Against Gary Bettman and the NHL
Marc-Andre Fleury is one of the most beloved players of his generation. Now he's added another feather to his cap as he proved the NHL will not enforce their own policies this year.
Fleury Defies NHL, Shows Support For Cause With Custom Mask
Prior to the season starting, the NHL announced that players would not be allowed to show support for special causes in the form of warm-up jerseys or any other kind of personal statements. The league's ban on pride tape seemed to be a part of this policy, but that one has already been reversed. Now it seems that the entire policy was just hot gas leaking from the league office as Marc-Andre Fleury just proved that players can still show support for causes without facing disciplinary action from the league.
With the recent Marc-Andre Fleury Mask incident
Connor was reminded of
Logan Thompson not being allowed to put a Hockey Fights Cancer ribbon on his mask from earlier this month.
«Who were they trying to protect there? The ‘I love cancer' crowd?» 🤣

It will be interesting to see if other players start to rethink the policy as well. So far, the league has been silent about Fleury's mask, indicating that there will be no disciplinary action for it. Perhaps goalies like Logan Thompson will now feel like they can put special symbols, such as a hockey fights cancer ribbon, on their mask without having to fear that they will face a fine.
Fleury's Mask Sells For Huge Number, Generating Money For Charity
Marc-Andre Fleury placed his custom indigenous-themed mask up for auction after the game where he used it. The winning big eventually went for just over 35 thousand dollars. All the proceeds went to the Minnesota Wild Foundation and the American Indian Family Center.

«Very generous. It's for a good cause, which is the main reason why I wanted to wear the mask
(Full quotes below)
Fleury's wife is of indigenous decent. When asked about the mask he responded saying he felt that is was the 'right thing to do.'
"To me, I just thought it was the right thing to do. I'm not someone that likes to go against rules. My mom was surprised that I wore it, but it just made no sense to me. Like, I've had four paint jobs on my masks this season, so I could have worn this mask all season and nobody would say a thing. It's just such a small thing to do. but it meant so much to the people we're raising money for and the person, Cole (Redhorse Taylor), who designed it."
Who will be the next player to openly defy the league's new rule?
