In a tragic turn of events, Andrey Michkov, the father of 2023 NHL Draft prospect Matvei Michkov, was found dead in Russia.
Matvei Michkov's Father Tragically Passes Away
After being reported missing on April 2nd, Andrey Michkov was discovered deceased in a pool, as reported by Russian sports outlet
Sport Express.
HC Sochi, which had loaned young Matvei Michkov from SKA St. Petersburg, had been assisting in the search for his father. The club later released a statement confirming the tragic news.
Matvei Michkov experienced a remarkable resurgence after his loan move to Sochi, scoring 9 goals and accumulating 20 points in 27 games with the club. His impressive performance broke the all-time KHL points record for a draft-eligible player, a record previously held by Vladimir Tarasenko.
Michkov is widely considered a top-5 prospect by most major scouting sites. However, his draft stock has been impacted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which led to the IIHF banning the Russian team from participating in the World Juniors. As a result, Michkov was unable to showcase his skills in international play.
Andrey Michkov was 52 years old at the time of his passing. The hockey world extends its deepest condolences to Matvei and the Michkov family during this incredibly difficult time.
