PK Subban Makes Controversial Statement About Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs

That is exactly what he did today on ESPN. The former defenseman called out the Leafs depth by saying if they did not have Matthews, they would not be a playoff team.

While it is safe to say that the Leafs would be significantly worse off without Matthews in the lineup, saying they would fall out of the playoffs is a bit much. The team still has superstar level talent outside of Matthews. Players like William Nylander and Mitch Marner would be the best player on many clubs around the NHL.

Furthermore, the Leafs depth has been showing up lately. In the team's latest game against the Arizona Coyotes, every forward in the lineup had at least one point except for one. Matthews only drew the headlines because he scored his 52nd goal of the season when the game was already decided.

Of course, it is hard not to focus on Matthews considering the fact that he is on a historic scoring pace this season. It seems now that every goal he scores becomes a headline.

That being said, the Leafs have shown that they do not need him scoring three goals a night in order to win. Hopefully, they can consistently prove that to be the case throughout the remainder of the season.
