The Toronto Maple Leafs have a big decision to make surrounding Mitch Marner, but it appears now they'll put the ball in his court.

After their disappointing end to the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Toronto Maple Leafs have been surrounded by rumours all off-season long, most of which have been centered around star forward Mitch Marner. Marner will hit unrestricted free agency in 12 months time, and given his poor playoff performances, many within the fan base believe trading him would be the best move, but with a no-trade clause, that isn't all up to the team.
Now, NHL Insider Chris Johnston has given a massive prediction, revealing that Marner walking as a free agent, rather than being re-signed or traded is the most likely outcome.
"It's probably more likely he walks than he signs an extension. Not significantly so, but if we were setting the betting lines now, the favourite would be [he] walks as a free agent, then I would say re-sign is the next favourite. I'm just not sure they are going to give him the option to stay either."
While this would clear up significant cap space for Toronto, it would leave them with no assets for one of the best regular season forwards the team has ever seen, so it would no doubt be a move that splits opinion among fans and analysts. Still, there's a long time to go before the 2024/25 campaign and longer until the trade deadline, so absolutely anything could happen between now and then.
