There's been a lot of Mitch Marner trade talk surrounding Toronto lately and, some of the ideas out there are pretty wild. Yet here's one that might actually work out for both sides.
Martin Necas in Carolina is itching for a change. He wants a bigger role, and it looks like the Hurricanes might be ready to move on from him.
Necas struggled last season, but he has potential. If the Leafs could swing a deal around Necas, he could slide right into Marner's spot in the lineup. Some changes the power play led by new coach Craig Berube, could find himself on the top unit too.
Hurricanes fans might not be thrilled with what the Leafs would want in return. Yet, Marner's a star, one of the best right wingers in the league. He's going to cost a haul even if he's a $10.9 million rental.

Here's the proposed deal:
Hurricanes send Necas (with an extension), a 2024 first-round pick, a 2025 second-round pick, and a prospect. Leafs send over Marner (also with an extension).
Leafs get some cap space back, a promising young player, and extra draft picks. Hurricanes get a star-studded lineup to boost their forward lineup, alongside Sebastian Aho, Andrei Svechnikov, and Seth Jarvis.
The move would open up more room for William Nylander to shine in Toronto, fitting with his big new contract.
Marner has a no-movement clause, so he'd have to agree to the trade. Raleigh might not be his first pick, but it's a cup contender. Maybe he's ready for a quieter media scene. We'll have to wait and see. A trade would have happen between now end July 1st with the Hurricanes.
