Auston Matthews at one point this season was on a goal-scoring pace not seen in several decades. After a recent goalless drought, he has come back down to earth. In a recent interview, Matthews spoke about his struggles and plans to get back on track.

Matthews Comments On Goal Scoring Struggles

Heading into the stretch run of the regular season Auston Matthews is having one of the biggest slumps of his season. In his last 5 games, Matthews has just one goal and is only on pace to score 69 goals. While this is nothing to be ashamed of Matthews knows he needs to be better.
I mean, stuff like that happens sometimes," he said. "The puck's not just going to go in all the time. I thought there were some good things. Obviously, I want to produce. I want to help the team and do my part."

While Matthews has not been himself when it comes to goal scoring the Maple Leafs are still likely playoff-bound where his goal-scoring will matter more. Head coach Sheldon Keefe made his thoughts on Matthews' play known as well.

Keefe Sounds Off On Matthews Goal Scoring Issues

At the same time Matthews was talking about needing to get back on track head coach Sheldon Keefe was asked about his star center's play. Keefe was less worried about the struggles and remains impressed with Matthews' play.
"He had at least two, maybe three, but certainly two, fairly clean chances where he was basically in alone on the goalie in Boston and those didn't fall for him," Matthews said. "Obviously, things have fallen a lot for him this season and they will again. Somewhat of a historic type of pace that he was on is historic for a reason, because it's difficult to maintain."

Matthews' lack of goal-scoring success is frustrating for sure however he has plenty of time to get things worked out. His next opportunity to get back in the goal column will come on Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers.
