GM Brad Treliving is living in salary cap hell right now, after signing free agents this offseason and inheriting the expiring contracts of William Nylander and Auston Matthews.

Only Takes 1 Player to Fix the Problem

Calle Jarnkrok signed a four-year deal with an AAV of $2.1 million under former Leafs' GM Kyle Dubas. Despite criticism from Leafs' fans, Jarnkrok performed well, putting up 20 goals and 19 assists in the 2022-23 season.

Jarnkrok's History with Treliving

Even with his past performance, Jarnkrok could be a prime player to move out of the franchise in order to free up cap space, especially given his past performances under Brad Treliving.
Jarnkrok was traded in 2022 by Treliving after putting up a meagre 4 points in 17 games in Calgary.
With their current roster situation, the Leafs would be compliant to start the season. However, doing so would place Matthew Knies on waivers, a vital prospect for the Leafs organization. It's highly unlikely a player of Knies' capabilities would clear waivers.
Treliving could choose, instead, to move Jarnkrok and hope that Knies will be able to transition smoothly into his spot in the top 6 of the lineup. After Knies' brief performance in the playoffs last season, that isn't out of the question.
