Auston Matthews has shown his reluctance to putting the team in front of himself before. It was first seen when Matthews signed an expensive contract that walked him directly to unrestricted free agency.
It is now being seen again with Matthews showing reluctance to resign. While it makes sense from his perspective, it comes off as quite selfish.

Leafs reporter Luke Fox said the following about Matthews:
"Until Matthews feels comfortable with the plan, he probably won't be putting pen to paper."
While this makes much sense for him, not signing till the plan shows the Leafs being competitive for the years he signs for, it is a «me first» type action showing he lacks faith in the team.
