Major Extension Coming Soon For Auston Matthews
The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a busy offseason. New general manager Brad Treliving has been busy trying to balance out the notoriously top-heavy lineup. Now it seems as though he has shifted his focus to superstar Auston Matthews and his looming extension.
Matthews Toronto's Biggest Superstar
Auston Matthews has been Toronto's biggest star in town since arriving in 2016. His career is highlighted by his 2021-22 season where he won the Rocket Richard Trophy, the Hart Trophy, and the Ted Lindsay Award. He also eclipsed 100 during that season. This has led to speculation that the extension for Matthews will be a massive one.
Extension In The Near Future
Must read on Daily Hockey Dose
According to TSN's Chris Johnston both Matthews and the Leafs want to get an extension done but Matthews is waiting to find the best way to help the Leafs win. This could be to allow the team to make other moves and then Matthews to fit his contract into the remaining cap space.

Johnston also reported that a timeline is known for the potential extension as well. Matthews will most likely follow in Nathan Mackinnon's footsteps and sign a deal early into training camp. If this holds true we should get news of a potential extension in the coming weeks.
Auston Matthews: "My intention is to be here."
Adds he'd like the extension done before next season.
