The Leafs are closing in on training camp, and William Nylander remains unsigned. Rumours are circulating about his contract, as well as how he will be used this season for the Leafs. This NHL insider weighed in on his status this morning.
This morning, Elliotte Friedman gave an update on Nylander's contract and how the Leafs could potentially be interested in trying him out at center this year.
"Will the Leafs try [nylander] again at center? I think that is something that has been discussed."
The Leafs have tried Nylander at center before, giving him an opportunity last year in training camp to show he can handle the additional responsibility the position carries. However, he usually finds himself back on the wing, as his defensive play isn't his strong suit, and where he is able to show off his skating and scoring ability.

The Leafs made a strong addition to the depth down the middle of the ice by adding Max Domi to the roster. The major question, though, in their top-6 is whether or not Tavares can keep his game up to speed. Last year, the Leafs' captain showed small signs of struggle as the season wore on.
Obviously, Matthews is the number 1 centerman for the Leafs. Between Domi and Tavares, the Leafs should be fine down the middle with their first two lines. Nylander should be used where he succeeds, on the wing.
