The Toronto Maple Leafs made an epic comeback in their home opener against the Montreal Canadiens, and unsurprisingly, after getting healthy this summer, their biggest star made the biggest impact.

An opening night hat-trick

After falling behind 3-0, the Maple Leafs got red-hot, and it was Auston Matthews who led the way, tallying a hat-trick in the first game of the year after what many perceived as a down year in 2022-23.
This also got them to 1-0 on the season, and given how tight the East is expected to be, every victory counts, but unsurprisingly, the Toronto media weren't as impressed with his performance.

A strange question

Despite his three goals and major contribution to a big come back, Matthews was asked after the game how he felt about scoring three goals, 'despite not playing his best', and this was his response.
Matthews is asked what he thought about getting a hat trick while ‘not playing his best game' tonight:

«Honestly, I don't know, Steve»
That question comes from infamous Leafs reporter Steve Simmons, who has been criticized over the years for being a sensationalist and being a reporter that no player or official wants to deal with, as Brian Burke made very clear when he left Toronto, and now, it's clear he's still up to his old antics.
Regardless, the Leafs made a huge comeback behind three goals from Auston Matthews, and if that's them not at their best, this season should be a fun one when they hit their stride.
