Auston Matthews Sticks Up For Teammate After Media Criticisms
The Leafs were able to get a win last night against the Kraken, and this player was given the team's game belt. Auston Matthews was forced to defend it to the media almost immediately.
Ilya Samsonov got just his second start since returning to the Leafs last night during the Leafs' second half of their back-to-back. The Leafs were able to play a pretty well-rounded game, only allowing 17 shots on goal and getting the victory for Samsonov, his first since December.
Even though he wasn't called on much, Samsonov had a number of great saves that kept the Leafs ahead, something they've struggled with over the past few games.

Samsonov opened up after the game on how much the opportunity meant to him, and that it has been a while since he has had this feeling, and that his teammates have been supportive through his tough moments.
Samsonov's Performance Earns Him the Game Belt Despite Some Speculation
Samsonov's performance was recognized by his teammates, specifically Auston Matthews, who decided that he earned the team's Player of the Game award. Matthews was asked after the game if this was a move to boost Samsonov's confidence, to which he promptly shut down.
"I don't think it was, like, a charity gift. You know, very well deserved. Obviously it's been tough for him the last couple weeks & I think tonight was a really good step in the right direction..."
The Leafs will be happy to see Samsonov continue to take steps to get his game back where it needs to be for them to go on a run this season. They will hope to build off this win later this week when they face the Jets.
