The Calgary Flames are feeling the sting of their rivals' success once again. With the Dallas Stars bowing out of the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs after a defeat by the Edmonton Oilers in the Western Conference Final, the Flames found themselves on the losing end of another trade.

Back in March, Chris Tanev was shipped off to the Dallas Stars from the Flames in a multi-team deal involving the New Jersey Devils. In return, the Flames got some prospects, a pick, and a conditional pick.
With the Oilers showing the Stars the door before they could make it to the Cup Final, Calgary missed out on that conditional third-round pick. And that's not the only time Edmonton has thrown a wrench into Calgary's plans.
Remember when the Oilers dashed the hopes of the Vancouver Canucks in the second round? That move also had repercussions for the Flames. Calgary traded Elias Lindholm to the Canucks, and part of the deal included a fourth-round pick. If Lindholm and the Canucks had made it to the conference finals, that pick would've been bumped up to a third-rounder. Edmonton's victory over Vancouver put an end to that possibility.
Also, two former Flames players, Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett, have been instrumental in the Florida Panthers' journey to the Stanley Cup Final. Both players were shipped off to Florida by the Flames, and now they're facing off against the Oilers for the ultimate prize.
It seems like wherever the Flames turn, their rivals are there to foil their plans.
