New front runner emerges in Patrik Laine acquisition
Patrik Laine has been cleared to return from the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program, and the Columbus Blue Jackets are actively working with his agent to find him a new team.
While Laine has been linked to several NHL teams—including the Carolina Hurricanes, Washington Capitals, Minnesota Wild, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, Chicago Blackhawks, and Toronto Maple Leafs—some of these teams are reportedly losing interest.
Patrik Laine may not be staying with the Columbus Blue Jackets
Sportsnet's Eric Engels recently downplayed the Canadiens' interest in Laine, stating on "The Sick Podcast with Tony Marinaro" that the rumors made him laugh. He highlighted that Laine's overall game, outside of goal scoring, isn't strong enough to justify a serious pursuit.

Additionally, Laine's contract, which includes a 10-team no-trade list and carries an $8.7-million cap hit for two more years, complicates potential trades. Laine might also be hesitant to face the high-pressure environment of Montreal after seeking help for his mental health.
Meanwhile, Sammi Silber of The Hockey News mentioned that a trade to Washington is unlikely due to the Capitals' cap constraints. The Carolina Hurricanes, however, seem to be the leading candidates, especially after a recent comment by Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell hinted at an imminent trade.
