Serbian CrossFit athlete passes away after drowning during competition

In what appears to be a horrific accident, Serbian athlete Lazar Dukic passed away during the CrossFit Games, bringing the organization's safety protocols into question.
Athletic events always present some level of danger and risk, which competitors must weigh when deciding what events to participate in. However, sometimes event organizers miss the mark on safety procedures, leaving athletes vulnerable to more accidents during their time on any court or course. Many allege this to be the case in the latest tragedy at the CrossFit Games in Fort Worth, Texas. Toward the finish line of the 800-meter swimming event, Serbian athlete Lazar Dukic was nowhere to be found. This resulted in a mass search party, with professionals and spectators alike, going out to try to locate him

Provided the intensity and expected professionalism of the event, many watching on in horror are calling for an end to the CrossFit Games. Fans have held the organization responsible for gross negligence for setting up an endurance swim in deep water and not recognizing seemingly obvious signs of drowning.
Though there is no indication that this inaction was intentional, it resulted in the timely death of a promising young athlete, and the CrossFit Games organization should be held appropriately accountable.
