New way Refs are Taking Accountability for Bad Calls in Europe is Raising Eyebrows
This intriguing way that European leagues are making referees take accountability for bad calls is interesting, and it's making the NHL take a look at how it operates.
Bad calls are inevitable in hockey. The game moves extremely fast, and human error will always come out for calls with razor-thin discrepancies. However, it can seem to fans that when referees get calls wrong, there is no accountability.
Well in Europe, that isn't the case. Refs are commonly required to give post-game interviews, similar to how players do, to explain certain calls they made during the game. This can include an explanation of how the ref saw the play occur and has even included outright apologies to players for missed calls.

Could the NHL Follow Suit?
The NHL is notorious for protecting its referees. Any comment about missed calls and unfair refereeing is met with an instant fine by the league. However, some are calling for the NHL to follow suit, as the criticism for NHL reffing has grown in the past few years.
It seems as though the interview format has been well-received by European fans, and is something that the NHL could consider one day.
