Alex Ovechkin is one of the greatest goal scorers and players of all time. Tonight his rough start to the season got even more frustrating.

Ovechkin Reaches New Low In Most Recent Game

Alex Ovechkin's struggles to begin the season continued against the Ottawa Senators tonight. Ovechkin was held without a shot for the second game in a row. This is the first time this has ever occurred in his NHL career.

After Monday's game vs #Flames and tonight's game @ #Sens, Alex Ovechkin has been held without a shot on goal in consecutive games for the first time in his ENTIRE career (per NHL.com's Tom Gulitti), which is in its 19th season.

He has also been held without a goal through the first 3 games for the 2nd season in a row, and just the 3rd time in his career.

The longest Ovi has gone without a goal to start a season was in the 2013 lockout year, when he went 4 games without a goal. He led the NHL in goals that season with 32 in 48 games. #ALLCAPS

This is a disturbing trend for both Ovechkin and the Capitals. Alex Ovechkin is entering his age 38 season and many assumed he would continue to dominate in the goals department. Unfortunately, this has not been the case so far as he has been held shotless in 2 of 3 games. Could this be the beginning of the end for the Capitals contending window?

Are The Capitals Done Contending?

With Alex Ovechkin struggling one has to wonder if the Capitals window to compete is done. Their other main star Nicklas Backstrom doesn't have a point yet this season. The only players with multiple points are John Carlson and Matthew Phillips.

For a team that was supposed to play more offensive and aggressive under head coach Spencer Carbery, this is a disturbing trend. If Ovechkin and the Capitals continue to struggle and end up on the outside of the playoffs looking in the trade deadline could be a mass exodus of good players.
