The Toronto Maple Leafs have yet to find a permanent role for Nick Robertson, and now the talented 22-year old opens up on a future likely elsewhere in the NHL.
Despite having a career best campaign in 2023/24, Nick Robertson's future doesn't appear to be with the Toronto Maple Leafs, even though the team have a clear need in their bottom-six for skilled wingers. Even after posting 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games played, Robertson has officially requested a trade, and when asked about it during a recent interview, he opened up on his mindset heading into 2024/25.

According to a report, Robertson clearly envisions himself playing somewhere beyond Toronto next season, and with training camp approaching quickly, it makes it clear that he expects a trade to happen. At 22-years of age, Robertson has dealt with plenty of injuries, and given his lack of production before last year, it makes sense if Toronto are hesitant to open up a permanent role for him on the roster.
«I think, obviously, at this stage of the summer, the Leafs are still working through what happens with Nick Robertson, but there's a pretty clear path for him to be part of the mix at left wing, to potentially have a role that exceeds what he's had in the past," Johnston said. "But at this stage, Nick Robertson doesn't seem inclined to sign in Toronto and is sticking to the idea that he'd like to play somewhere else. And so I think they have to kind of sort that out first or as part of this.»
Even after the trade request, Chris Johnston revealed that the team are still looking to find a role for him on the team, but without that commitment, it appears both sides are ready to move on. With a loaded top-six for a team that's ready to chase a Stanley Cup, expect Toronto to continue searching for trade partners for Robertson, and if they find it, it would be in both of their best interest to make a deal happen.
