Sure, Toronto Maple Leafs superstar Mitch Marner is making a hefty $10.9 million a year, but that hasn't shielded him from a flood of criticism after another first round exit.
At one point, it felt like his days in Toronto might be numbered. Now, it seems clear he's sticking around and is embracing the chance to make it rain in his contract year.
On the 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman dropped some interesting tidbits about Marner's offseason. Apparently, he's been all business, taking this summer more seriously than ever. He's aware of the pressure mounting on him, and is determined to have a breakout season.
How he performs on the ice could make a big difference in what he's able to command in his next deal. With that in mind, it's no surprise that Marner has been training with some of the NHL's biggest names.

Friedman mentioned that Marner's been working alongside superstars like
Sidney Crosby and
Nathan MacKinnon at the Biosteel camp. Word is, he's been looking absolutely dynamite with them.
This situation feels like the one the Leafs recently had with
William Nylander. Marner seems to be hoping to follow that path: play so well that the Leafs can't think about letting him go when it's time to talk contracts again.
As Friedman said, deep down, that's probably exactly what Marner is aiming for.
I think deep down that's what Marner wants to happen to.
This season could define the 27 year-olds legacy in Toronto, and with the stakes higher than ever, Marner seems poised to rise to the challenge.
