John Tavares was this close to becoming a San Jose Shark in 2018 after they had prepared a monsterous offer for the Leafs captain.

Can you imagine the alternate reality where John Tavares was in a San Jose Sharks uniform and opted to sign for them instead of the Toronto Maple Leafs during the summer of 2018. According to Chris Johnston, during his summer as a pending free agent, John Tavares received a monster off from the Sharks brass when they were still in their competitive phase.
Chris Johnston says Sharks offered John Tavares 7-yrs, $13M AAV when he was a UFA (SDP)
Tavares opted to sign a less pricey deal with his hometown Maple Leafs across seven years for a "hometown discount". Well, that discount is quite pricey nowadays in Toronto as he is aging and can't keep up with the cost of the contract, unlike years ago when he was the most sought out centre available.

A lot can change in six years..

At this time now, in 2024, Leafs fans are calling on his captaincy to be stripped, in favour of Auston Matthews:
John Tavares was named captain under Kyle Dubas and Mike Babcock following the reveal Auston was charged with disorderly conduct and disruptive behaviour.

New GM, new coach, 6 years later.

I think it's time we revisit Matthews for captain this year
