Kyle Dubas could be sending an offer sheet to the Toronto Maple Leafs for Nick Robertson
According to some reports, Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas is considering offersheeting Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nick Robertson.
Dubas made many friends in Toronto, and is somewhat notorious around the NHL for attempting to bring back players and personnel from his time in Toronto, like Jason Spezza as a piece of his front office, or when he traded for former Leaf Michael Bunting last season.
It seems Dubas is attempting to bring another one of his former players to Pittsburgh, as there are reports floating around that he might offer sheet Leafs forward Nick Robertson, who has yet to sign a contract with the Leafs.
"Rumors indicate the Penguins are contemplating a one-year, $2.1 million offer sheet for Robertson. This strategic move could put the Leafs in a difficult position, as they are currently pressed tightly against the NHL salary cap. Matching such an offer sheet would require significant financial maneuvering for Toronto."
A move like this could be very smart for Dubas, as paying Robertson $2.1 million would put the Leafs over the salary cap, while only having to give up a third round pick for Robertson, a small price to pay for a player with his upside.
Robertson was once highly touted in the Leafs prospect pool, and around the league, but injuries and inconsistency have derailed the start of his career, only appearing in 81 NHL games over the past three seasons, recording a solid 33 points.
Robertson would get much more of an opportunity to play in the top 6 in Pittsburgh, as they have a lot of question marks in their forward core. Perhaps he would even get the chance to play with Sidney Crosby or Evgeni Malkin, two of the NHL's biggest superstars.
For now, Leafs nation waits patiently on news about Robertson, but I have a feeling they won't be waiting long.
