The so-called 'core-four' in Toronto has been the subject of much debate among Leafs fans recently. Should the team trade Auston Matthews? What About William Nylander? Morgan Rielly? Rumors and debates alike flooded Toronto's streets after another disappointing playoff performance. Now though it seems all these rumors have been put to rest as Matthews was re-signed and it sounds like Nylander is next.
Johnston Shares Thoughts On Nylander
Leafs fans may not have to worry about star winger William Nylander for much longer. While contract negotiations have reportedly cooled off, NHL insider Chris Johnston is now reporting that the team is willing to make a concerted effort to keep in in Canada's most populous city.
"I don't think there's any reason to think Nylander won't sign an extension in Toronto. Here's the dirty secret of that negotiation in my opinion: The Leafs know he doesn't want to play anywhere else... What the Leafs could pay him over 8 years and what another team if he leaves on July 1st as a free agent can pay him is not really that different... I'm willing to say I would put it at least 90% odds Nylander is a Leaf next season"

The Leafs will have approximately 33 million in cap space this upcoming offseason with 11 players signed for next season. They still need to sign 12 players but they should be able to find a way to make sure Nylander is one of them.
Nylander Off To Amazing Start
While Auston Matthews has stolen the headlines with hat tricks in back-to-back games, Nylander has more quietly had himself an amazing start to the year. He has had no problems finding the score sheet himself as he already has three goals and three assists through the team's first three games of the season.
Nylander figures to be a major piece for the Leafs this season. If Johnston is correct, then he will be a huge part of the team for a long time.
