Leafs Veteran Defenseman May Find His Way Out Of Toronto Soon
TJ Brodie and Brad Treliving's history together is well known. Before Brodie came to Toronto, he was in Calgary providing his services to Treliving's Flames. In a recent interview with Luke Fox of Sportsnet, Brodie shed some light on his current contract situation and how he plans on moving forward. When asked if he had had contract discussions with the team, Brodie responded succinctly.
"No. It's one of those things where I'm just focused on day to day, and I'm not too worried about anything like that."
He also confirmed that he would like to stay with the Leafs if possible.
"Yeah, definitely, but we'll see what happens."
Brodie Is Only Getting Older
Brodie comes into this season as a 33-year-old on an expiring contract. Next year he will be 34, looking for a new deal assuming he can't secure an extension before the end of the season.
Treliving may want to see how Brodie performs this year before he can confidently assess whether or not to re-sign him. The Leafs are also in a tricky cap situation with Nylander due a new contract this summer and Marner the next.
With those two contracts expiring soon, Treliving is likely going to have to pinch pennies around the outskirts of the roster and Brodie could be a victim of that. For now though, both sides will try to bring Lord Stanley back to Toronto.
