Earlier this week, rumors emerged about a possible deal being made between the Toronto Maple Leafs and William Nylander.

Despite these rumors, Elliotte Friedman wanted to set the record straight.

Elliotte Friedman Sheds Light on Nylander's Negotiations with the Maple Leafs

With the season he's having, Nylander's in a position to ask for a major raise. However, Friedman urged his camp to not push too far in the negotiations.
Here's what he said on his podcast, 32 Thoughts:
"The agent's not talking, but if there was nothing here, the agent would be letting people know, 'there's nothing here'. In my history, that's the way it goes.

The only danger here, because I think everyone wants this done, I think the player wants this done, I think the team wants it done, I think the agent wants it done - the only danger zone here is, does it ever get to a point where, as much as the Leafs have moved, it doesn't get to a space where they can agree and the Leafs just say, 'you know what, we can't go there'.

Again, I have not spoken to the Leafs, so I'm being super careful about this, but I think they feel that they've really budged a lot and now Nylander has to budge a little bit too - and if that happens, this is going to get done. From what I understand right now, there's no reason why this contract shouldn't happen."

The Maple Leafs and Treliving Have a Breaking Point

It was reported that Nylander seeks around $11 million a year. An arguably too high figure. Even is his great season helps his value, can he repeat that success somewhere else, without Matthews, Marner and Tavares?
In past seasons, we've seen a few players sign big contracts and don't meet the expectations afterwards. Take a look at Calgary and Jonathan Huberdeau. The massive contract that Brad Treliving offered him is probably one of the worst in the league.
If Nylander asks for too much, he'll make the Leafs back up in the negotiations. Fans hope Treliving won't make the same mistake he made in Calgary.
Updates will follow.
