This NHL insider just revealed the strategy that the Pittsburgh Penguins will likely take into the trade deadline, which may be unfortunate news for Penguins fans.

Elliotte Friedman Reveals the Penguins Will Not Be Buyers at the Deadline

The Pittsburgh Penguins have not lived up to expectations this season. With Kyle Dubas coming into the organization, and the massive blockbuster trade for former Norris winner Erik Karlsson, the hype was real for the Penguins back in September, with fans ready for another Crosby-Malkin run before they retired.

However, the season has not gone that way at all. The Penguins, while not completely out of the post-season discussion, have struggled to climb the standings. This, despite Crosby's incredible individual performance this year, is troubling for a team that was expected to do well.

Now, Elliotte Friedman has revealed that the Penguins aren't expected to make any major moves at the deadline and instead will be looking for a longer-term rebuild.

"I don't think they're going to be buyers... Pittsburgh is not going to be trading first-rounders or second-rounders or their best prospects for short-term fixes. I think this is a team that realizes it needs to rebuild some of its capital."

"I think they'll try to do a soft rebuild, strengthen up over the next two or three years and see what they can do and we'll see what that means for some of their star players"

Penguins Will Need to Do Inventory of Long-Term Assets

The Penguins are coming to the end of an era, that is definitely how it feels in Pittsburgh. Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin are nearing the end of the road, and when they are gone, the Penguins will be stripped down to the studs. This begs the question as to what assets the Penguins have to move, and if Crosby and Malkin are off limits.

Will Dubas be approaching Crosby for a potential move? He clearly has the value that could set the Penguins up for long-term success after his retirement. However, this would be a legacy-breaking move, as Crosby has been the face of the Penguins his entire career.
