The NHL is around a week away from the start of the NHL season. This means the final round of NHL cuts is coming closer. Today the New York Rangers made a big decision with their latest cuts.

Rangers Cut Top Prospect

Today the New York Rangers announced their next group of NHL cuts. This group had some of the best players yet to be cut. This included their 2021 First Round Pick Brennan Othmann.

"TRANSACTION: Forward Brennan Othmann has been assigned to the Hartford Wolf Pack."

With this move, Othmann will head to the AHL for the first time in his career. This is one of the few top prospects for the Rangers who has had the opportunity to play in the AHL before coming up to the main roster.

Othmann Looking To Prove He Belongs In Pro Hockey

With this season being Othmann's first in the AHL he will look to translate his great junior career into pro success. In his draft year, Othmann also played professional hockey in Switzerland. This will be his first time playing pro in North America.

The Rangers have struggled to develop their top-drafted prospects in recent years. With Othmann they are being patient which is a new approach for the franchise. In the past players like Alexis Lafreniere and Kaapo Kakko were thrust into the lineup right away and have struggled to develop.

With Othmann the Rangers will look to start a new trend. He had a good preseason and plays a game that is compatible with playing up and down an NHL lineup. If he succeeds early on in the AHL he could earn a shot at his NHL debut sometime this season.
