Heart-Wrenching Revelation: Why Pierre-Luc Dubois Opted for a New Number
Pierre-Luc Dubois has been seen wearing three different numbers, 18, 13, and 80, during his NHL career, each with its own significance. While 18 and 13 were typical choices for a forward, his switch to 80 was unusual and left fans puzzled as it is rarely chosen in the NHL.
Tribute to a Lost Friend
Dubois recently shared the poignant reason behind choosing 80, revealing it as a tribute to Matiss Kivlenieks, who tragically passed away in 2021.
He remembered the memorable first game and win of Kivlenieks at MSG and wanted to honor the legacy of his fellow player whose promising career was abruptly cut short.
For Matiss, who passed away in Columbus. I was there for his first game, first win. That game at MSG was unbelievable. He was outstanding...when he passed away, I wanted to wear number 80...I wanted to keep his legacy going because his career got cut short. If I ever win the Stanley Cup, it'll be my last name, but it'll be his number.
Respectful Remembrance
Matiss Kivlenieks's passing was a profound loss for the hockey community. It is reported that he heroically saved the life of Elvis Merzļikins, displaying remarkable bravery. Pierre-Luc Dubois' gesture stands as a significant tribute to the nobility of Kivlenieks, ensuring that his memory will continue to be part of the hockey world.
If Dubois were to secure a Stanley Cup victory, the dedicated number would serve as an enduring memory to Kivlenieks, commemorating his life and impact on the game.
