Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau had the best year of their careers beside each other, and now the Panthers star opens up on his grieving since Johnny's passing.
The entire NHL world has struggled since the passing of Johnny Gaudreau, affectionately named Johnny Hockey, but it's hit his former teammates much harder than anyone. One of those players is Florida Panthers star Matthew Tkachuk, who recently spoke with Josh Yohe of The Athletic where he opened up on the heartbreak and the tragedy that defined this off-season for the NHL.
I want to keep his memory very much alive. [...] This was supposed to be the best summer of my life, and I have some wonderful memories from the past few months, but at the end of this incredible summer, the unimaginable happened.
Ever since I left Calgary and moved to Florida, all I've done is tell stories about Johnny. I was always talking about him. I hated being away from him, and we were always in touch.
We were so excited to play together again
The two played together for a long time in Calgary, with their final season together seeing both tally 115 points on the season, and it's clear how much the friendship meant to both, with Tkachuk continuing to tell the stories of the player and the person that No. 13 was. Since the passing, Tkachuk has reflected plenty on his own life, and acknowledges how lucky he is to be in the position he's in, but can't deny how hard it's been since Johnny's passing.
I know I'm lucky and that I have a good life, I'm a professional hockey player, but I won't lie to you-the past few weeks have been extremely, extremely, extremely tough... I still can't believe it. It's just so sad. All of it.
It's going to be tough for everyone in the NHL for quite some time, especially with games getting underway and the tributes continuing to flow for the former Flames and Blue Jackets star, but with players like Tkachuk, Sean Monahan and so many others continuing to tell his story, it's safe to say his memory is going to last for a long, long time.
