There are rumors circulating about the future of Calgary Flames Head Coach Darryl Sutter. Sutter, who is in the third year of his second stint with the team, missed out on a playoff spot this season. Expectations had been high following the blockbuster trade for star Forward Jonathan Huberdeau and Defenseman MacKenzie Weegar from Florida. However, Huberdeau's first season in Calgary saw a regression in his performance, with a drop from 115 to 55 points.

Calgary was just two points away from a playoff spot, but Sutter has received criticism for his lack of playing time for younger players like Dustin Wolf, Matthew Phillips, and Jakob Pelletier. Instead, he has prioritized the team's bigger veteran core, similar to his approach in his previous job in Los Angeles.
There have been reports of Flames players allegedly refusing to play for Sutter if he remains the head coach next season. NHL Insider Darren Dreger has added fuel to the rumors, while NHL analyst Evan Renaerts has suggested that the Flames may buy out Sutter's contract, allowing the team to wait for a rebound season before deciding whether to move on from the experienced Head Coach.
The AHL Head Coach Mitch Love is waiting in the wings in Calgary. This season, Love became a back-to-back winner for AHL Coach of the Year and played a significant role in developing many of Calgary's top prospects. Regardless of the team's decision, the Flames have shown support for Sutter and his experienced resume. However, they may opt for a change, considering the strong coaching option that Love represents. Nonetheless, the Flames seem comfortable giving Sutter another chance, given his proven winning record and the team's near miss at a playoff spot.
